Jeffery James Gilbert violin, Peterborough, UK, 1916
SKU: S599
Although largely self-taught, Jeffery James Gilbert was a very fine luthier, as evidenced by the prestigious medals he won in the late nineteenth century for his instruments. A prolific maker, he produced over 350 violins, 40 violas and 12 cellos, which are still held in high regard. The ‘f’ holes of this fine example, with their rounded wings, are reminiscent of Pietro Rogeri, though the broad outline and wide, flat arching speak more of Guarneri del Gesu. The tone is dark, deep and vibrant with a good range of tonal colours. While easy to play at any dynamic, this violin enjoys a strong engagement with the bow.
