The Kriners were a relatively large family of Mittenwald violin makers, several of whom were called Joseph. This violin, however, while sporting an elegant, Mittenwald-style label, owes very little to the Southern German violin making tradition, let alone the Klotz family, whom the Kriners were very much influenced by. This instrument, though broadly and strongly modelled, is not without visual charm. The tone is woody and characterful.
