Josef Oskar Nobitschek trained with his father, also called Josef, in what is now the Czech Republic. He then worked for a time in Berlin before establishing his own workshop in Innsbruck, Austria, where he was joined by his brother Bruno. This violin, while acknowledging the work of Guarneri del Gesu, has its own distinctive character. Strong edges and corners are offset by a rounded outline and a slightly full but well-blended arching. An attractive, oil-based, red-gold varnish has aged naturally. The tone is big and bold, and—like the modelling—full of character.
