The older Richard Duke was one of England’s most prominent and influential eighteenth century violin makers, establishing workshops in such descriptively-named locations as “Lamb’s Conduit Passage”, “Red Lyon Street near Graye’s Inn Passage” and “Great Turnstile”. This instrument, with its well-rounded arching, is a good example of his Stainer model which, along with his Amati models, made up the bulk of his output. The tone is strong and clear, retaining its quality in the higher octaves on all four strings, and making it an excellent choice for advanced students and emerging professionals.
